Joseph E. Winter

Joseph E. Winter, 89, Marienthal, died Aug. 16, 2010, at the Wichita County Health Center, Leoti.
He was born Aug. 11, 1921, at Windthorst, Tex., the son of Albert and Mary Caecilia (Stanzel) Winter.
A farmer, stockman and dairyman, he had been a Wichita County resident since 1947, moving from Windthorst. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II with the 279th Bomber Group in the European Theater.
He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Marienthal.
On Feb. 8, 1949, he married MaryAnn Baker at Marienthal. She survives.
Other survivors include: five sons,  J.  Alan, and wife, Rita, Cheney, Tony G., and wife, Jennifer, Leoti, Randy A., and wife, Barbara, Livingston, Mont., Jim B., and wife, Carla, Columbia, Mo., and Sydney P., and wife, Julie, Chandler, Ariz.; one daughter, Caecilia M. Gropp, and husband, Terry, Scott City; one brother, Albert, El Campo, Tex.; one sister, Matlida Danler, Kinsley; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Annie Winter.
Vigil service was held Aug. 18 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marienthal.
Funeral mass was held Aug. 19 at the church with Fr. Mike Helms officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary Cemetery, Marienthal, with full military honors provided by the United States Army Funeral Detail from Ft. Riley.
