There was very little offense to generate any excitement for Scott City’s traveling squad on Monday evening. So the 12-14-year-old players created some excitement with their defense.
With the game against Sublette well in hand, Scott City turned in a pair of sterling plays to close out their 10-3 win on the home field.
Starting pitcher Sloan Baker was on the mound in the fifth inning looking for a complete game win, but Sublette was able to keep the game alive with a one-out single and a walk that put runners on first and second.
A single up the middle looked like it might score a run when center fielder scooped up the ball and made the throw to shortstop Trey O’Neil who was standing on the outfield side of second base.
However, O’Neil bare-handed the throw from Fisher, wheeled and threw to home plate in time for catcher Keigun Wells to make the tag and prevent the run from scoring.
Moments later, Baker tried a pickoff play at second base, but the errant throw ended up in short center field. As the Sublette runner broke for third base, Fisher was charging the ball and made the throw to third in time to get the final out of the inning and game.
Sublette’s pitching staff had control problems throughout the game, which prevented Scott City (6-0) from getting very many good cuts at the ball. Despite scoring 10 runs, the only Scott City hits were a hard RBI single by O’Neil in the second inning and an infield single by Hunter Braun in the third inning.
Scott City took advantage of 11 walks and one hit batter in four innings of play.
Baker pitched a no-hitter through three innings before giving up three runs in the fourth inning on two singles and a triple. He allowed five hits over five innings.
