Florence Evelyn Orten Smith

Florence Evelyn Orten Smith, 87, Quinter, died July 12, 2010, at the Long Term Care Facility, Quinter.
She was born Dec. 10, 1922, at Grainfield, the daughter of George R. and Eva Alice (Weekly) Orten.
She attended school in Grainfield, graduating from Grainfield Rural High School with the class of 1940.
After her short career as a domestic and baby sitter, she moved in 1941 to Dighton where she worked at the Pwonka Café, later at Egbert’s Drug Store, then at the Dighton and Scott City sale barns as an office clerk. She also worked at the Oakley sale barn where her husband was an auctioneer.
On Nov. 22, 1941, she married Roderick “Rod” Smith at Shields in the home of their pastor’s parents. Rod died April 30, 1984.
She and Rod moved to Oakley in 1951 and to Scott City in 1955.
In Scott City, she worked as bookkeeper for Western Hardware and Supply, the Scott City Clinic, followed by the Brookover Cattle Company, Inc., from which she retired in 1990 after 20 years as office manager.
She was a life member of the Eastern Star, Dighton Chapter.
Survivors include: one brother, William L. Orten, Quinter; two nephews and two nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; her sister, Vera Roberts; four nephews and two nieces. 
Following cremation, graveside service and burial will be held Mon., Aug. 9, 10:30 a.m., at the Healy Cemetery with Rev. James Brackett and Pastor Keith Funk presiding.
