SC girls win division at Denver tournament

Winning eight of nine games, the Scott Community High School girl’s basketball team claimed top honors in their division at the Gold Crown Tournament in Denver, Colo., the weekend of June 19-20.
After dropping just one game in pool play, Scott City rolled through their final three games in bracket play, including a win over Leoti in the championship game.
Emily Hess, who had averaged eight points per game for the tournament, poured in a team high 12 points to lead the Lady Beavers in a 38-31 win over Leoti.
Shanaya Hoeme and Carissa Chelemedos each added eight points.
Three players scored in double figures as Scott City slipped by Regis, Colo., in the semi-finals, 41-34.
“It was the best game our guards played in the tournament,” says coach Mark Campos.
Guards Audrey Baker and Hess had 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Chelemedos added 11 points in the low post.
In the first round of bracket play, Campos says his squad “had our best overall performance in the tournament” with a 53-21 win over Hope Christian, N.M.
Scott City dominated in the paint where Chelemedos scored a tournament high 27 points while Janessa Lowenthal finished with 16.
Results in pool play were:
Game 1: Scott City closed out the game with a 25-6 scoring run to defeat Sidney, Nebr., 31-26. At one time the Lady Beavers trailed in the first half, 20-6.
Chelemedos led the team with 14 points.
Game 2: Scott City defeated Holy Family, Colo., 34-28. They were led in scoring by Chelemedos and Hess with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Game 3: Lowenthal had a team high 12 points in a 37-28 win over Chatfield, Colo. Chelemedos added 10 points.
Game 4: Lowenthal and Chelemedos accounted for 43 of the team’s points in a 49-12 rout of Heritage, Colo. Scott City owned the paint, led by Lowenthal’s 22 points and Chelemedos with 21.
Game 5: Scott City survived a 38-32 scare from Fossil Ridge, Colo. Chelemedos and Lowenthal led the way with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Game 6: Playing on tired legs, a second half comeback fell short in Scott City’s 35-34 loss to Springer, N.M. Hess led the team with 10 points.
Chelemedos finished the tournament averaging 14.2 points per game, followed by Lowenthal with 9.2 points. Other team members were Magin Mayer and Kelly Wycoff.
