Defense wasn’t the big concern for the Dighton High School girls when they faced cross-county rival Healy on Tuesday night.
This game was about offense and finding someone who would complement senior Kaylee Cramer who is averaging 19.3 points per game.
Dighton (3-4) got an easy 54-21 win, but the questions still surround the offense.
“We’re asking more of our guards. We want them to shoot the ball more and, hopefully, gain some confidence in their shooting,” says head coach Amy Felker.
That becomes even more important with the news that junior Emily Torson will be lost for the season following knee surgery over the Christmas break. Torson, who had averaged 13.2 points and 10.4 rebounds prior to her injury, was able to take some of the defensive pressure off Cramer.
Unless another offensive threat - or combination of scorers - step forward it will allow teams to focus their attention on Cramer.
Healy (1-4) had no answer for Cramer as the senior poured in 27 points despite sitting on the bench in the fourth quarter. She was able to drive the paint at will and also knocked down a couple of short range jumpers while scoring 12 of her team’s first 14 points as the Lady Hornets jumped out to a quick 14-3 lead.
Cramer had 18 points by halftime as the Lady Hornets were cruising along with a 30-14 advantage.
The only other Dighton player in double figures was Sarah Mulville with 14 points.
“I was hoping for more scoring from some girls, but they did a nice job of making passes to the inside which was really open tonight,” says Felker. “When they’re making the good pass, I’ll take it. But we’ve emphasized to them that when teams shut down the inside, it’s in their hands to take shots from the outside.”
Cramer will also need to take her game outside the paint to avoid being double-teamed in the low post. That will create opportunities for her to score by driving to the basket.
“Kaylee knows she can’t score all the points, and she doesn’t want to,” Felker adds. “She’s looking to pass the ball and get her teammates involved. But she also knows that if we’re to win she has to be a big contributor on offense.”
Healy was led in scoring by Angee LaToush with 10 points.
