SCHS in league dual tournament on Saturday
By Rod Haxton, editor
SCHS wrestlers will be closing out their regular season in dual action during the upcoming week.
The Beavers will travel to Holcomb for the Great Western Activities Conference dual tournament on Saturday. SCHS will open the tournament with Ulysses at 2:00 p.m.
Four more rounds of wrestling will be held throughout the day.
Because the tournament was rescheduled from last Saturday because of the threat of bad weather, and since some students had ACT tests to take in the morning, all wrestling action will be held in the afternoon.
Action will be held on three mats in the Holcomb Middle School gym.
Scott City ends its regular season on Thurs., Feb. 9, when they travel to Goodland for a dual starting at 6:30 p.m.
SCHS is expected to have most of their lineup intact that they will be taking to the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament.
After missing the Rocky Welton Invitational due to injury, Alex Kough (120) and Michael McEachern (220) will be back in the lineup.
The status of Kolton Paul (145) is in question as the result of an ankle injury. Warren Kropp (152) will be out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury.
Colby is favored to win the league title. However, the runner-up spot could be a coin flip between Scott City, Hugoton and Goodland.
While the Beavers are currently the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3-2-1A, they have struggled to compete well in dual action.
SCHS does feature several top-ranked wrestlers in the state, including James Jurgens (113, No. 2), Kough (120, No. 1), Clay Mulligan (132, No. 3) and Luke Hayes (285, No. 1).
Among the feature matches on Saturday will be Kough and Colby’s Dustin Reed (ranked No. 1 in Class 4A) along with Michael McEachern (220) against Goodland’s Riley Oharah (ranked No. 1 in Class 3A) whom McEachern defeated a year ago in the regional tournament.
