Bridging the gap
Gilberto Dorantes says he’s an entrepreneur who comes from a family of like-minded business people.
“My father, my grandfather and great-grandfather owned their businesses and were successful,” he says. “I figure why not me?”
Dorantes has found his business niche as the owner of the Spanish Yellow Pages for Southwest Kansas. Thousands of phone books are distributed throughout 19 communities in Kansas plus the Oklahoma Panhandle.
The phone book made sense given Dorantes’ heritage and the area’s growing Hispanic population. He estimates that the Hispanic population will soon overtake the Anglo population “if it hasn’t already.”
“I would say that about 80 percent of them, especially the older ones, prefer Spanish or don’t speak English very well,” says Dorantes, who lives at Modoc. “I know people who have lived in this country for 30 years who don’t speak English well. They don’t need English where they work.”
