The photo was surreal . . . a young girl with a look of shock, being consoled by her mother as they walked along the sidewalk. Accompanying them - one behind and one in the front - were two armed police officers in military gear offering protection.
At last, Congress has passed its something’sbetter-than-nothing package of gun-safety legislation. Though the vast majority of Republicans voted against the extremely modest law, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) assures us that they are “committed to identifying and solving the root causes of violent crimes.”
The speed at which the teachers in our public schools went from being heroes who quickly adapted to pandemic isolation to villains causing longterm emotional stress for young people has been mind-numbing.
For decades, a significant faction of the Republican Party has been playing the long game with an eye on overturning Roe v Wade and ending abortions. It may not have even seemed a reality, so much as a means of driving supporters to the polls time after time with the false hope of eventually having all the political and judicial pieces in place.
