Playa lakes are a unique phenomenon largely unnoticed by casual observers except during rain events when they can hold water for days or even weeks - creating a nuisance for farmers and a temporary haven for wildlife.

When the wheat harvest dragged on until late July because of unusually wet weather, the one consolation for many area farmers was what that abundance of moisture would mean for the fall crops.
