William K. ‘Bill’ Walker
William K. “Bill” Walker, 79, died at the Logan County Hospital, Oakley, on August 29, 2024.
He was born on August 9, 1945, in Norton, the son of William Gail and Geraldine May (Groves) Walker.
He had been a resident of Oakley since 2021, moving from West Plains, Mo.
In 1963, Bill graduated from Medicine Lodge High School and then graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield four years later.
He had a career in education that covered nearly 50 years.
After stints in Dodge City and Salina, he came to Scott City in 1969 where he taught and coached until 1975 when he moved to Union City, Okla., to teach at Yukon High School, Yukon, Okla.
In 1979 he returned to Scott City to teach and coach the SCHS girl’s basketball team. He then became an assistant boy’s basketball coach (198992).
Bill then transitioned to full-time administration. He remained at SCHS until 2000 when he moved to Jewell County, Ks., and became principal, and later the superintendent, for the White Rock School District.
After that, he was superintendent for both the White Rock and Mankato school districts until he led the effort to consolidate both into the Rock Hill School District in 2006.
In 2013, he retired from education and moved to West Plains, Mo. He moved to Oakley in May of 2021.
He was a member of the Ionia United Methodist Church, Ionia, Ks.
On Dec. 18, 1966, he married Marilyn R. Stillwell in Friend. She passed away on June 10, 2021, in Oakley.
Survivors include a son, Yancey and wife, Kristy, Oakley; two stepgrandchildren, Christian Koch and Cadence Koch, Oakley; a sister, Judy Walker Link, Cunningham; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Whitney Walker.
The funeral service will be held Fri., Sept. 6, 2:00 p.m., at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with Pastor Dan Hutton presiding.
Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery.
