Gayle Mildred Axton Crossman, 88, died at her home in Homer, Aka., on Feb. 20, 2024.

Gayle was born Feb. 9, 1936, in Pueblo, Colo., to James Merritt Axton and Fern Myrtle Stapleton. She was the third of six children.

On June 18, 1955, she married her life partner, Verl “Jr.” Crossman. They met at Kirk’s Drive-In in Orem, Utah, where Gayle worked.

They were the parents of three children, one boy and two girls.

The family lived much of their life in the city of Fairfield in Utah County before moving to Kansas. They returned to Utah briefly before eventually moving back to Kansas.

Gayle will be remembered for the great love she had for everyone.

For awhile, Gayle served as a preacher in the Church of the Nazarene. She also delivered Meals on Wheels to seniors in Provo, Utah, during the 1980s.

Gayle lived in Kansas until the death of her husband on June 29, 2020. Following his death, Gayle moved with her daughter, Fern, to Homer, Aka., where she lived out the rest of her life.

Survivors include a son, Verl Thomas Crossman and wife, Monda, Shallow Water; daughters, Cherie Bishop and husband, Thomas, American Fork, Utah, and Fern Crossman, Homer, Aka.; a sister, Joyce Axton Jensen; sister-in-law, Nora Axton; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James Ralph Axton, baby boy Axton, and Ronald Axton; and a sister, Darlene Axton.

Visitation will be Fri., March 1, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., at Price and Sons Funeral Home, 401 S. Washington St., Scott City.

A graveside service will follow on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Scott County Cemetery.
