Greg Cheney
Greg K. Cheney died on February 1, 2026, at his home of the past four years, Via Christi Village, where he was surrounded by a dedicated care team who provided him with compassionate and exceptional care.
He was born on May 1, 1954, in Garden City, to Howard Edwin and Lauretta P. Cheney.
Greg attended elementary school in Friend and Shallow Water, followed by Scott Community High School from 1968-72.
Following graduation, he attended Colby Community College from 1972-74, where he served as Student Council President during the 1973–74 school year and earned his associates degree in 1974.
He continued his education at Kansas State University, majoring in horticulture.
On August 12, 1974, Greg married Phyllis M. Withington at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood. She survives.
Together, they made their home in southern Scott County in 1975. Greg farmed alongside his family for 30 years before relocating to eastern Kansas.
During that time, he worked in several roles, including with Community Living Opportunities in Lawrence, and later alongside his son, Braden, in building waterscapes.
Greg deeply loved spending time with his grandchildren and cherished moments with family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, music, collecting gems and rocks, and had a strong appreciation for art.
He was an avid reader with a deep love for books - especially the Bible and often said, “The day they stop printing books is the day history can be erased.”
Greg openly shared Jesus and the hope of salvation and eternal life, holding firmly to his faith and the promise of eternity.
In 2006, Greg was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and in 2013 he underwent deep brain stimulation surgery. Throughout his journey, he remained hopeful and purposeful, always desiring that others with Parkinson’s could learn from his experience, gain understanding, and find encouragement through what he shared.
He is also survived by his sons, Braden J. Cheney and wife Amy, Topeka, and Shawn M. Cheney and wife Jackie, Paola; daughter, Victoria M. Woods and husband Jeremiah, Chapman; brother, Gary Cheney and wife Julia, Scott City; sisters, Judy Thomas and Karla Sharpe, both of Scott City; brothers-inlaw, Harlan Withington and wife, Vonnie, Rogers, Ark., Kenneth Withington and wife, Laura, Colby, and Dale Withington and wife, Debbie, Oberlin; grandchildren, Zen Cheney, Sloane Cheney, Cole Cheney, Grace Cheney, Roper Woods and Tripp Woods; step-grandchildren, Katelyn Deever and her husband, Michael; great-granddaughter, Myra Cheney; step-greatgrandson, Draven Deever; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
