James Richard “Dick” Smith, 81, died on Sept. 25, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

He was born on Sept. 28, 1941, in Garden City, the son of William Richard and Edythe (Coons) Smith.

A resident of Scott City since 1973, moving from Garden City, he was a cowboy.

He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Kiwanis Club.

On July 20, 1962, he married Sandra Barker in Garden City. She passed away on March 24, 2022, in Scott City.

Survivors include his daughter, Tish Burnett and husband, Bryan, Scott City; a son, Tony and Dominique Gray, Orange, Tex.; a sister, Kathy Koster and husband, Duane, Garden City; five grandchildren, Devyn Jones, Buhler, Brynna Burnett, Scott City, and Isabella, Caleb and Milena Gray, Orange, Tex.; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Donald McMillan; and daughter, Vicky Gray.

A memorial service will be held on Fri., Oct. 6, 2:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, Scott City, with Rev. Kyle Evans presiding.

There will be no calling times.

Inurnment will be in the Scott County Cemetery.
