JoAnn Elizabeth Oliver
JoAnn Elizabeth Oliver, 88, died Dec. 6, 2023. She was born Nov. 18, 1935, in Garden City, the daughter of Ora and Hilda Houghton.
JoAnn lived on the family farm until the age of three when the family moved from the farm into the city of Dighton.
She attended Lane County schools and graduated from high school with the class of 1953. She attended Colorado Women’s College in Denver, Colo., and graduated on May 25, 1955.
JoAnn was united in marriage to Robert E. Oliver, May 25, 1955, at the college chapel. They made their home in Scott City. He preceded her in death.
Her early years were spent caring for Methodist Camp Lakeside at Lake Scott State Park. Later, they moved back to Scott City and purchased the drive-in movie theater.
JoAnn’s special hot dog sauce recipe was a favorite among movie-goers.
They later purchased the Uptown Theater and ran it for several years. She later worked as office manager for Southwest Savings and Loan. During this time she was busy raising three girls, was an active member of the United Methodist Church and Circle Group.
She enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing bridge, and the companionship of Libby, her little Yorkie.
Survivers her include daughters, Gwen Coberly and husband, Jim, Gove, Shaunda Vogel and husband, Wade, Ness City, and Rachelle Hullett and husband, Steve, Sugarland, Tex.; eight grandchildren, Staci, Callie, Jacee, Kabel, Dakota, Brayden, Hunter and Hayden; and six great-grandchildren, Caidyn, Ryder, Brogan, Foster, Hudson and Harlan. JoAnn loved attending their activities.
JoAnn was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Waldo Houghton.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Fri., January 12, 2024, 10:30 a.m., at the Healy Methodist Church with Marletta Wilkens (JoAnn’s cousin) presiding.
A private family inurement will be held at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City.
