Juanita Audrey Hinnen ‘Bloom’ Whelan

Juanita Audrey Hinnen “Bloom” Whelan, 93, a longtime resident of Goodland, died at Goodland Regional Medical Center on May 11, 2022, with family at her bedside.

S h e was the daughter of Fred Hinnen and Greta Sorrell.

Juanita graduated from Clifton High School with the class of 1946 in Clifton, and enjoyed attending the yearly class reunions until three years ago.

On July 12, 1946, she married D. Lyle Bloom in Morganville. He preceded her in death. The couple had four children: Sondra, Tadd, Jody and Ty.

When her children were growing up, she and Lyle were very active with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Eastern Star, and Shriners. Her greatest joy was attending family activities that involved her children and grandchildren.

She was an active member of Eastern Star and in 2005 received her 50-year pin.

Juanita worked as a bookkeeper all her adult life in Clay Center, Scott City and Goodland. In 1976, the couple moved to Goodland where they owned and operated B’s Pump and Well.

In 1979, she and Lyle became co-owners of B-E’s Jewelry in Goodland which continued for 25 years.

Juanita is survived by her children, Tadd Bloom, Jody Engel and Ty Bloom; brothers, Mike Hinnen and wife, Kathy, and Robert Hinnen; 10 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding Juanita in death were a daughter, Sondra Graham; brother, Fred Hinnen; son-in-law, Keith Engel; and grandchildren, Pam Atkinson, David Engel and Kily Bloom.

Funeral service was held on May 19 at Koons-Russell Funeral Home with Pastor Gordon Pettibone officiating. Burial followed in the Goodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children and may be mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, Ks. 67735.
