Lauretta P. Cheney

Lauretta P. Cheney, 89, died March 16, 2024, at the Scott County Hospital, Scott City.

She was born on Nov. 12, 1934, in Garden City, the daughter of Verdie Olen “Pete” and Flora Pearl (Bursk) Simmons.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and the Lee Richardson Zoo, both in Garden City.

On Jan. 25, 1953, she married Howard E. Cheney in Garden City. He died on Nov. 22, 2012, in Scott City.

Survivors include her sons, Greg Cheney and wife, Phyllis, Manhattan, and Gary Cheney and wife, Julia, Scott City; daughters, Judy Thomas, Scott City, and Karla Sharpe, Scott City; nine grandchildren, 15 greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Glen Cheney; sisters and brothers-in-law, Alberta and Adam Rupp and Melba and Frankie Barber.

A graveside service was held March 20 at the Scott County Cemetery with Don Williams presiding.
