Lela Maxine Bishop, 102, died on Feb. 14, 2025, at the Wichita County Nursing Home, Leoti.
She was born on Aug. 13, 1922, in Brownell, to William Roy and Nellie Mae (Adkinson) Barnett.
Lela’s family moved to Scott City when she was 15 years old.
On Sept. 5, 1941, Lela married Richard Thomas Bishop at the Methodist parsonage in Scott City. He died on Oct. 6, 2007, in Pharr, Tex.
They moved to Texas in 1982, then moved to Arizona in 1985 before she and Richard bought a motorhome in 1987 and traveled until settling in Pharr, Tex., in 2000. In 2013, Lela moved back to Scott City.
Lela participated in the Senior Olympics (20022011).
She was the bookkeeper for Bishop Wholesale and Vending.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, Women’s Business League of Scott City, a member of the Scott Community Golf Course, and the Tip-o-TX Line dancers.
She is survived by her children, Harry Bishop and wife, Martha, Topeka, Karalea Bishop, Leoti, Deandra Jarret and husband, Chuck, Seattle, Wash., and Dean Bishop and wife, Marilyn, Guymon, Okla.; sisters-in-law, Juanita Barnett, Goodland, Martha Lee and Roy McNaught, of Florida, and Wendel Mott, of Illinois; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lela was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Neal and Wade; one sister, Thelma Miller; and one granddaughter, Amy.
Public visitation will be on Wed., Feb. 26, from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the First Christian Church, Scott City, on Fri., Feb. 28, 2:00 p.m., with Pastors Steve Payne and Rodney Hopper presiding.
Interment will follow at the Scott County Cemetery.
