Melva Knight

Melva Jean Knight, 96, died Aug. 7, 2025, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

Melva was born on Aug. 13, 1928, in Alamota, the daughter of Jacob “Jake” and Charlotte (Voos) Hemel.

She had been a resident of Scott City since 2006, moving from South Fork, Colo.

She worked as a bookkeeper and receptionist for Woody’s, Stormont Construction, and at KN Energy towards the end of her career.

Melva was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the VFW, the Women’s Auxiliary, and the American Legion in Dighton.

On June 12, 1947, Melva married Theodore Thomas Bailey in Dighton. He died Aug. 22, 1976, in Dighton.

On July 3, 1977, she married Freeman L. Knight in Holdrege, Nebr. He died April 26, 2021, in Scott City.

Survivors include her sons, Gary Bailey and wife, Sherlynn, Scott City, and Jerry Bailey and wife, Cindy Bailey, McPherson; step-daughter, Susan Thomas and husband, David, Yuma, Colo., sisters, Ila Boone, Scott City, Alice Rennison, Scott City, and Linda Barlow, Harper; eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, three sisters and a granddaughter.

The funeral service was held Aug. 14 at Price and Sons Funeral Home in Scott City with Pastor Steve Payne presiding.

Interment was in the Scott County Cemetery.
