Melvin Metzen

Melvin Norbert Metzen, 75, died, April 5, 2023, in Garden City.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1947, in Wichita, the son of Leo Matthias and Agnes Caecilia (Bayer) Metzen. Melvin had been a resident of Scott City since 1973, moving from Larned.

Melvin attended Kansas State University, majoring in animal husbandry. He pursued his career in Scott County working for multiple feed yards.

After a brief retirement from the feed yards, he took a position with Circle C Farms which became the job he enjoyed the most.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, coached multiple youth sports, and was an active volunteer in 4-H beef projects for over 20 years.

On Feb. 7, 1970, he married Janice K. Sanchez in Wichita. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Melvin B. Metzen and wife, Cammi, Garden City, and Daniel L. Metzen and wife, Sara, Houston, Tex.; one daughter, Karla A. Pammenter and husband, Taff, Garden City; one sister, Francis Treichel and husband, Al, Alton, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Kiersten and Brenden Hamit, Overbrook, Caleb Metzen and Kyler Metzen, both of Garden City, Lukas Metzen and Lily Metzen, both of Houston, Tex., and Jessica Pammenter and Jacob Pammenter, both of Garden City; and two great-grandchildren, Bryson Hamit and Emmaline Hamit, both of Overbrook.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service was held on April 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with Fr. Don Bedore presiding.

A graveside service was held on April 11 at St. Anthony Cemetery in Garden Plain with Fr. H. Setter presiding.
