Robert Cranmer

Robert E. Cranmer, 88, Manhattan, died on Dec. 20, 2023.

He was born on Dec. 1 1935, to Warren and Estella (Turley) Cranmer in Modoc.

The third of five children, he attended Scott Community High School, Garden City Community College, and spent four years in the U.S. Air Force.

He married Carla Epler on Dec. 20 1957. She survives.

They began their years together and enjoyed 66 years. They resided in Scott City, Englewood, Ashland, Ness City and Manhattan. Most of these moves were a result of Robert’s career in the U.S. Postal Service. His final position was Postmaster of the Ness City office where he retired in 1990.

He spent his final years at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan.

Robert was active in many community organizations and activities: Rotary, Scouting (Council Commissioner, Silver Beaver Award), NARFE (state president), NAPUS, American Legion, Municipal Judge and the Kansas Quality Workers Association.

He had many hobbies over the years: bowling (local and traveling leagues, national tournaments), woodworking (blanket chests, rocking horses, table and chairs, caskets), was a master hunter safety instructor, gun collecting and reloading.

Family was very important to Robert. He really looked forward to attending family gatherings. A dedicated and loving husband and father, he supported his children’s school activities, Scouting adventures and athletic events.

Other survivors include sons, Jon Cranmer and wife, Sanna, St George, and Brent Cranmer and wife, Annette, Fredonia; a sister, Donna Woodruff and husband, Joe, Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Warren Cranmer, Cleo Carpenter and Faye Stewart.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
