Verle Ray Cunningham

Verle Ray Cunningham, 79, died July 17, 2021, in Vaiden, Miss., while traveling on vacation.

He was born on May 18, 1942, to Lloyd and Lillis Cunningham in Scott City, along with his twin sister, Verla Jean. She died as an infant.

Verle attended grade school in a variety of towns due to his dad moving the family because of jobs. He graduated from Scott Community High School in 1960.

He attended CBC and later graduated from Seward County Community College, Liberal, Ks., with an Associate of Science Degree in accounting.

He served in the Army Reserves from 1966 to 1979.

His career started with the Ideal Foods store where he started as a box boy and worked his way to the Controller of the company. In 1979, he started his own accounting firm, Comprehensive Business Service and later changed the name to Cunningham Accounting.

In 1998, he sold his company and moved to Topeka where he worked for Yonning Tax Service, followed by the Henson, Hutton, Mudrick, Gragson and Vogelsberg Law Firm, the Topeka First Assembly of God Church along with Peggy’s Tax and Accounting firm where he was still working at the time of his death.

During this time he continued doing taxes for a few clients.

He married Loretta Jones in Liberal in 1963. She survives.

Other survivors include his children, Joy Truax, Topeka, and Tim Cunningham and wife, Sonya, Destin, Fla.; two brothers, Dan Cunningham and wife, Judy, Loveland, Colo., and Tom Cunningham and wife, Danae, San Antonio, Tex.; and three grandchildren, Kylon and Conor Cunningham, Niceville, Fla., and Matt Truax, Topeka.

A memorial service was held July 24 at the First Assembly of God Church, Topeka. Memorial donations are suggested to the Heritage Country Cowboy Church, Box 2, Scranton, Ks. 66537.
