Vernon Dale Soodsma

Vernon Dale Soodsma, 85, died Aug. 26, 2022, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

V e r non was born on July 4, 1937, in Phillips County, the son of John William and Gertrude Johanna (Hogan) Soodsma.

He was raised on the family farm near Prairie View and continued the family farming tradition until moving to Scott City.

He attended a oneroom school in rural Phillips County and graduated from Prairie View High School in 1955. He was a member of the Army National Guard. On October 8, 1965, he was united in marriage to Gladys Jane Kats at the Luctor Christian Reformed Church where he was a lifelong member. She survives.

He served as the woodworking project leader for the Lone Prairie 4-H Club in Prairie View for many years.

Vernon continued the agricultural life when he moved to Scott City and worked at Royal Beef Feedyard. He was an avid woodworker, well-known for his wood refinishing.

Other survivors include his three sons, Kevin Soodsma and wife, Amy, Grand Rapids, Mich., Scott Soodsma and wife, Melissa, Healy, and Terry Soodsma, Buffalo, N.Y.; two daughters, Denise Van Soelen, Denver, Colo., and Tonya Koehn and husband, Burke, Scott City; a sister, Leota Ehm, Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, Brittney VanSoelen, Patrick Van-Soelen, Blake Koehn, Tayler Koehn, Brice Koehn and John Soodsma; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was August 30 in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church in Phillips County with Pastor Shawn Richardson officiating. Burial followed in the Luctor Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Luctor Christian Reformed Church Memorial Fund in care of the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, Ks. 67661.
