After jumping out to an early 11 point lead and limiting Goodland to a lone basket in the first quarter, it appeared the Scott City boys would be able to coast to a win in their regular season finale.
The SCHS coaching staff has considered this year’s wrestling squad a “back side team,” meaning that their success comes from advancing most of their boys into the consolation finals.
Having seen a 16 point lead slip away in one of their two previous losses against Stanton County, Wichita County head coach Haydon Parks wasn’t about to relax after his team opened up a 51-30 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Having erased an 11 point deficit and finally taking their first lead of the game late in the third period it appeared the Scott City girls were going to avenge their earlier loss to Holcomb.
It’s been a season of “firsts” for the Scott Community High School girls’ wrestling program, and that list grew a little longer last Saturday as the first two Lady Beavers earned a berth in the Class 4-3-2-1A state tournament.
