All too familiar: Lack of leadership on vaccine rollout no surprise

Pharmaceutical companies around the world deserve praise for their remarkable achievement in developing COVID-19 vaccines - some with financial assistance from Operation Warp Speed and some not. Unfortunately, the Trump Administration’s role in the process should more aptly be called Operation School Zone.

While making accusations that the coronavirus is a Deep State or media-inspired hoax, this administration squandered the opportunity to minimize the impact on our lives and the economy. Even as the reality of the pandemic became unavoidable with the loss of thousands of lives in the U.S. each day, Trump was too consumed with undermining the postal service, issuing pardons and spreading fake reports of voter fraud.

Yet when Operation Warp Speed produced the first breakthroughs in a vaccine, Trump was all too eager to declare victory. The only thing missing was a “Mission Accomplished” banner hanging from the White House balcony.

Moncef Slaoui, chief advisor to Operation Warp Speed, promised that 20 million Americans would be immunized by the end of December. Instead, that number was closer to two million.
