Herd immunity: This administration willing to sacrifice 2 million lives
Grasping at any straw that will justify the Trump administration’s dismal response to the coronavirus pandemic, White House officials are reviving the idea of “herd immunity.”
The idea is being promoted by Scott Atlas, a neuroradiologist and Trump’s new coronavirus specialist, replacing Dr. Anthony Fauci. He is a radiologist, not an epidemiologist or immunologist. The difference is significant. It’s like expecting a cardiologist to deliver a baby because he’s also a doctor.
However, Atlas tells Trump what he wants to hear which is a “solution” that doesn’t require any level of thinking or planning at the federal level - which is a continuation of the existing White House strategy which has led to more than 185,000 deaths, 57.3 million workers filing for unemployment over the past five months and the prospect that as many as 40 million people could be displaced from their homes in the next several months (including 375,000 Kansans).
