An impossible quest for perfection
We all want to believe in heroes - not necessarily those from Marvel Comics or who fill the big screen - but real life heroes.
When we were growing up, Babe Ruth was the best player ever. Hands down. Mickey Mantle was close, but there was no replacing the Babe.
It wouldn’t be until many years later that we learned our baseball heroes were less than perfect.
Does that diminish Ruth’s 714 career home runs during a dead-ball era? Does that make his called home run in the 1932 World Series less legendary? Does that make Mantle any less talented?
Absolutely not. It just confirms what we all learn as we move from childhood innocence into adulthood - that we are all flawed creatures.
