Preserving democracy isn’t easy
To paraphrase Winston Churchill, “Never in the field of human conflict have so many worked so hard to do so little to protect our democracy.”
With that, 43 U.S. senators hid from their responsibility to protect this nation; not from Donald Trump’s failed attempt to overthrow our government, but from future individuals with equal contempt for our democratic values.
Trump’s acquittal of high crimes and misdemeanors by the Senate was a foregone conclusion. Convicting Trump, in essence, would have been an admission by Republican senators that they were coconspirators in perpetrating the Big Lie culminating with the events on Jan. 6.
