Time gives delusion of courage
I didn’t serve in Vietnam.
I didn’t want to serve. I didn’t know anyone who wanted to serve, though I had several friends and knew others who served because (a) they had no choice or (b) felt it was their duty when called upon.
By the time I was old enough to be included in the draft lottery, a very unpopular war was winding down. The chances of being called up were pretty non-existent - especially with lottery number 326.
Had it been a few years earlier, I would have worked a little harder to keep up my grades. Had it been necessary, I would have used college as my ticket to buy time - literally - and avoid the military.
