County are farms larger, shifting to corn

The number of farms in Scott County continues to decline while, as one would expect, and get larger, according to latest data released by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The number of farms in the county during 2017 - the most current data - is 236. That’s a decline of 41 from 10 years earlier.

Total farm acreage during this same time frame increased from 453,296 acres to 460,338. The average size of a Scott County farm is now 1,951 acres, compared to 1,636 acres in 2017.

Today, there are 93 farming operations of more than 1,000 acres.

Total market value of agricultural products sold in Scott County during 2017 was $1.13 billion. That compares to $762.7 million in 2017.

Scott County farmers and landowners received $6.8 million in government payments during 2017 - nearly double the $3.8 million in payments which were received in 2007.
