Fundraising begins for DeGeer statue
Local history has fascinated Deb Lawrence who has done considerable research over the years regarding local buildings.
It is Lawrence who initiated the effort to place plaques on various buildings in the downtown area which acknowledge what they were when originally built.
Her appreciation of local history has been surpassed only by her respect and admiration for the woman who made it all possible.
Maria DeGeer was the original founder of Scott City and the first structure built on this site was located about where Lawrence and Associates is today.
“I wasn’t aware of that until I started doing more research and learned that her wooden cabin was located at the same place as the two-story Grand Central Hotel,” says Lawrence, who operates the real estate agency with her husband, Shorty.
The location, she says, makes sense since it’s in the heart of Scott County.
