Extending Ogallala a priority for leaders across High Plains

It’s not a question of whether pumping from the Ogallala Aquifer is going to happen.

The question is whether producers and water rights holders will take significant action on their own or whether the state or federal government will need to mandate pumping reductions.

“We don’t want the federal government telling us what to do with our water,” Kansas Water Office director Tracy Streeter emphasized to more than 200 people attending the Ogallala Aquifer Summit in Garden City on Monday and Tuesday.
