Catherine Cecelia Bender
Catherine Cecelia Bender, 93, Chandler, Ariz., died Sept. 15, 2019.
Catherine was born on Dec. 30, 1925, to James and Rac h e l (Connor) Winderlin in Scott City. She was the youngest of four brothers and three sisters, all of whom have previously passed.
She was raised on a farm north of Scott City, attended a rural elementary school, and graduated from Scott City High School.
After graduation, she attended Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison where she graduated in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree in biology. She worked as a medical technician in Denver, Colo., Scott City, and Garden City.
She also worked for the U.S. Postal Service, delivering mail until her retirement.
She married Joseph P. Bender on Aug. 6, 1955, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City. He died in 1998. Catherine moved to Chandler, Ariz., in October of 1999.
Catherine was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, and St. Andrew Catholic Church, Chandler.
She is survived by six children: Fred Bender, Kay Warner and husband, John, Cindy Long and husband, Jerry, Steven Bender and wife, Melissa, Chuck Bender and wife, Libby, and Keith Bender and wife, Deb; 14 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.
Visitation will take place at Garnand Funeral Home, 412 North 7th St., Garden City, on Sat., Sept. 21, from 9:00-10:45 a.m. A graveside burial service will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
The St. Mary Catholic Church Altar Society will host a reception following the burial at the VFW, 1101 West Mary St., Garden City.
Catherine was a prolife advocate. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Right to Life or another pro-life cause.
