Dr. Robert D. Pokorny
Dr. Robert D. Pokorny, DDS, 92, died on June 10, 2020, at Brookdale Assisted Living, Hays.
He was born on Aug. 16, 1927, the son of John and Bertha (Kerbs) Gillig, at LaCrosse. Following his father’s early death, Bob and his brother, John, were raised by his mother and adoptive father, William Pokorny.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving as a survey and instrument ammunitions specialist. He earned a WWII Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal (Japan).
He was a graduate of Fort Hays State University with majors in biology, chemistry and zoology. He worked at Sunflower Ordinance in Lawrence as a chemist until enrolling in the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry.
His dental practice spanned almost three decades in Hays.
He was a lifelong member of Rotary Club, VFW, Hays Chamber of Commerce, Hays United Methodist Church, FHSU Alumni, and UMKC School of Dentistry Alumni. He also served on the Kansas Dental Board of Examiners.
He married Alice Weesner in 1956 and they had four children, William Pokorny, Hays, Deana Groen and husband, Fred, Medfield, Mass., Linda McLean and husband, Mark, Overland Park, and Julia Thornburg and husband, Allen, Scott City.
Bob married Betty Schwartz in 1987. He was a stepdad to her four grown sons, Chan, Dennis, Frank and Jack Schwartz.
He also had nine grandchildren.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Fri., June 19, 2:00 p.m., at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Rose officiating. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post No. 9076 Honor Guard will follow in the La-Crosse City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the FHSU nursing scholarship program in care of the funeral home.
