Gerald Joseph Smith
Gerald Joseph Smith, 88, died Nov. 21, 2018, at the Wichita County Health Center, Leoti.
H e was born June 24, 1930, in Okarche, O k l a . , the son of Anton Smith and Marie (Wittrock) Smith.
He was a lifelong farmer of Wichita County and the first to grow corn in the county.
He served on the St. Mary’s Church Parish Council for 10 years and was a lifetime member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He served on the board of directors for the Scott Cooperative for 10 years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1954-56, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. His discharge rank was SP4(T).
On June 24, 1953, he married Imelda J. Baker at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marienthal. She survives.
Other survivors include: three sons, Earl Smith and wife, Deb, Marienthal, Don Smith and wife, Liz, Scott City, and Ernie Smith and wife, Christi, Scott City; three daughters, Sharry Nelson and husband, Clem, Johnson, Kathy Owings and husband, Dale, Lawrence, and Ruth Hovey and husband, Bill, Olathe; one sister, Alice Stroud, Okarche, Okla.; 18 grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy Ketterer; one brother, Sylvester Smith; and one infant son, Joseph.
Funeral service was held Nov. 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marienthal. Burial was held in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
