Josephine ‘Josie’ Martinez

Josephine (Josie) Martinez, 83, died Sept. 29, 2017, at the Wichita County Health Center, Leoti. She was born Oct. 24, 1933, in Merrill, Nebr., the daughter of Pedro and Dominga (Medina) Hernandez. A resident of Leoti since 1946, moving from Sugar City, Colo., she was a nurse assistant and homemaker. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, VFW Auxiliary, Business and Professional Women, former 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader and Leoti EMT. She was a founding member of Virgin of Guadalupe in Ordway, Colo., where she taught English to the Spanish community. She enjoyed dancing, cake decorating and crocheting. On June 3, 1961, she married Gregorio (Greg) Martinez in Marienthal. He died March 2, 2003. Survivors include four children, Mark Martinez and Pamela Norwood, Aurora, Colo., Tom Martinez and Hilda Chairez, Goshen, Ind., Greg Martinez, Jr., and wife, Sheryl, Leoti, and Valerie Martinez, Omaha, Nebr.; nine siblings, Carmen Hernandez, Ordway, Colo., Raymond Hernandez, Deerfield, Lupe Hernandez, Meade, Bertha McGann, Palco, Connie Maturey, Satanta, Theresa Torres, Leoti, Mary Hernandez, Satanta, Andrea Gerstberger, Alamosa, Colo., and Rosario Klar, Broadus, Mont.; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Nick Hernandez, Paul Hernandez and John Anthony Hernandez. Vigil service was held Oct. 4 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Leoti. Funeral Mass was held Oct. 5 at the church with Fr. Benjamin Martin officiating.
