Leverne N. Huslig
Leverne N. Huslig, 96, died on Feb. 16, 2020.
He was born on Feb. 10, 1924, to Leo and Mary (Boor) Huslig on a farm near Hitschmann, Ks., the oldest of eight children.
The Huslig family moved to a farm near Fowler and farmed in that area until 1939. Leverne graduated from St. Anthony’s Catholic School and Fowler High School.
Upon graduation, he was drafted and served in World War II as the flight engineer on the B-24 freighter version, flying “The Hump” in the CBI (China, Burma, India) Theatre.
Leverne farmed for over 70 years in Scott and Lane counties.
He married Marilee T. Feist on Oct. 9, 1948, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Ellinwood. She died in 2018 in Ellinwood.
He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Hump Pilots Association.
Survivors include his sons, John Huslig and wife, Betty, Alexandria, Va., Jeff Huslig and wife, Terri, Ellinwood, Bennett Huslig and Adele Komarek, Ellinwood, and Daniel Huslig, Austin, Tex.; a daughter, Laura Jones and husband, Tom, Annapolis, Md.; a brother, Hugo Huslig and wife, Connie, Wichita; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gene; a daughter, Elva; two sisters, Marion Sandlin and Florene Miller; and four brothers, Bernard, Melvin, Elmer and Donald.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place Fri., Feb. 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, Ellinwood.
