Cupp earns return to state tourney in singles

A growing rivalry with Colby’s Drew Starbuck hasn’t gone well this season for William Cupp.

While putting together an outstanding 25-6 record, four of Cupp’s losses have come against the Colby junior.

The last of those was during the semi-finals of the Class 3-2-1A regional tennis tournament on Saturday, but this one was a little different. After dropping the opening set, 6-1, the Scott Community High School junior lost the second set by only a 6-4 score.

Cupp followed that setback with a loss to Larned’s Dalton Penka (6-2, 6-3), but his fourth place finish was enough to earn a trip to the state tournament for the second consecutive year.

“I wasn’t too excited about seeing (Starbuck) on my side of the bracket, but I figured I’d have to play him sometime,” noted Cupp.

Cupp rolled through his first two opponents with straight set wins over Michael Smith (Russell, 6-0, 6-0) and Dylan Pfeifer (WaKeeney, 6-2, 6-2), setting up the semi-final match with the No. 2-seeded Starbuck.
