An emotional ride

Thomas bounces back for improbable silver in 1600m

Four years after winning his first gold medal at the Kansas High School Track and Field Championships, Jack Thomas was a prohibitive favorite to win at least one more - possibly two - in his final trip to state.

A track phenom while in middle school, Thomas embarked on what was expected to be a spectacular running career when he claimed the Class 3A state title in the 3200m as a freshman, followed by a runnerup finish in Class 4A his sophomore year.

When the Beavers returned to Class 3A a year ago, another 3200m title - and possibly the 1600m - seemed almost a foregone conclusion.
