Hawkins, 4x100m claim gold medals in Scott City Relays

It might be possible to sneak up on Clare Hawkins once. It won’t happen a second time.

The Scott Community High School freshman saw a gold medal in the 1600m slip away in the final few yards, but she came back to easily win the 3200m during the Scott City Relays on Tuesday.

The only other gold medal for the Lady Beavers came in the 4x400m relay against a tough field.

Competing under nearly ideal conditions, Hawkins almost pulled off a sweep of the distance events. She led for most of the 1600m with Colby’s Lara Murdock only a step behind throughout the race.

Hawkins even stretched the lead to about five meters with only 150 meters remaining, but that’s when Murdock made her surge. She was able to overtake the SCHS freshman with about 30 meters remaining and Hawkins wasn’t able to regain the lead.

“I knew she was the one I had to beat,” says Hawkins. “I wasn’t sure how big my lead was and I didn’t hear her coming up behind me. If I’d have known, I might have been able to hold on for the win, but it was still a pretty fast time.”
