it’s more than power
It’s easy to assume that the weight room is only about building strength and power.
And while that’s always a goal, it’s not the only goal.
“We don’t worry so much about strength gains during the summer,” says SCHS head football coach Jim Turner, who runs the summer weight program with SCHS strength/conditioning coach Todd Richardson.
The emphasis during the summer program has been explosiveness. In order to achieve that, Richardson describes this summer’s program for high school youth as “hang clean dominant.”
“You can have big numbers in the squat and the bench, but that doesn’t mean you’re a great athlete,” says Richardson. “To move a bar from the middle of the ground to your chest one has to be explosive. The hang clean is the most explosive lift.”
