Making the right call
When most young athletes are dreaming of becoming a professional football or basketball player, Todd Tichenor had different ideas.
He wanted to be a Major League Baseball umpire.
“That’s been a goal of mine since I was in high school,” says the Garden City resident who has returned home to enjoy the brief break between MLB seasons.
While meeting with students and community members during the recent Hornet Buzz speaker series in Dighton, Tichenor acknowledged how fortunate he has been to realize his dream.
Out of 300 individuals who attended two umpire schools, Tichenor was among only 17 who advanced. He is among only three from that small group who are currently umpiring in the big leagues.
