Meyer wins first pro race with sub-4 minute mile
A strong finishing kick was Brett Meyer’s trademark to success as a collegian and a Division II 1500m national championship.
It also led to his first win as a professional.
Coming from behind in the final 200 meters, the former Scott Community High School and Fort Hays State University runner claimed the men’s title in the Ryan Shay Mile held in Charlevoix, Mich.
Meyer broke the four-minute barrier for the second time in his career with a winning time of 3:58.18 to take home the $1,000 prize money.
“It’ll cover this trip for us for sure,” Meyer told the Petoskey News-Review about his recordsetting finish.
The race also doubled as an opportunity for he and his wife, Kelly, to honeymoon following their June 15 wedding.
“I wasn’t expecting winning this because there were some great competitors, but it came out awesome,” said the 22-yearold.
