A different mental outlook puts Hayes back in front

Wyatt Hayes is having fun again on the track.

It’s not that the Scott Community High School senior doesn’t enjoy the workouts and the opportunity to compete with his teammates. But the pressure he was putting on himself as the defending 800m state champion was taking its toll.

When he was clocked in 2:10 at the Liberal Invitational two weeks ago, he decided it was time to take a different approach mentally.

“I think I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to run what I did at the end of last season in the 800 and it takes time,” says Hayes. “I told myself to start enjoying it more and just relax. I’m still going to give 110 per-

cent every time and now I’ll see what happens.”
