Stevens is top performer for state runners-up

In late summer, Brinlie Stevens was still trying to decide what fall sport she wanted to participate in as she was preparing for high school.

She had been a volleyball player during junior high while her sister had been one of the state’s top cross-country runners.

“I wasn’t sure I had what it took to compete in cross-country,” she said.

Nonetheless, she decided on cross-country and throughout the season has proven that she has more than what it takes. The Scott Community High School freshman put an exclamation point on that by leading the Lady Beavers to a second place finish in the Class 3A championships at Wamego last Saturday.

Stevens (21:52) finished 24th overall as the Lady Beavers returned to the podium at state for the third time in the past four seasons. SCHS was a state runner-up in 2017 and claimed a state title in 2018.
