With only six wrestlers making the trip to the Class 4A state tournament, the Beavers knew they had little room for error if they were to bring home a state trophy.
Scott Community High School had five grapplers finishing among the top six in their weight divisions and winning state medals. That was just enough for them to finish third in the team standings with 92 points - behind Marysville (112.5) and Winfield (100) and just ahead of Pratt (86) and Frontenac (85.5).
“I told the guys earlier in the week let’s not worry about the team scores. Let’s try to put all six on the medal podium and the team score will take care of itself,” says senior Wyatt Hayes who claimed his second consecutive 170-pound state title.
Also claiming a gold medal for the second straight year was junior 132-pounder Justus Mc-Daniel while junior 138-pounder Kaden Wren was a runner-up for the second consecutive season.
Also claiming state medals were 145-pound senior Theron Tucker (6th place) and senior 220-pounder Kyle Sherwood (5th place).
