SCHS nearly shocks No. 2 Norton in opener

The frustration was evident on Sarah McCormick’s face and in her voice following Wednesday’s opener in the Class 3A state tournament.

It didn’t get any better when she saw the game stats that showed Norton had attempted 30 free throws to just 15 for the Lady Beavers.

A 19-6 scoring advantage at the charity stripe prevented Scott City (17-7) from upsetting the No. 2 seeded team in a 48-45 thriller in the first game of tournament action at Hutchinson.

“We did a lot of things well and we had our chances in the fourth quarter, but we put ourselves in a bad spot early in the game,” says McCormick.

“You can’t put yourself in a hole at the state tournament. It’s really hard to climb out of. We had to expend a lot of energy just to climb back into the game.”
