A day at the beach

SCMS students relive memories of once popular recreation site in county

It wasn’t the original plan, but a week with the Beach turned into a week at the beach for Scott Community Middle School fifth graders.

Singer and songwriter Thad Beach, who has made putting local history to song part of his annual visit to Scott City, joined with students in learning about Beaver Beach.

The recreation site, located northwest of Scott City, was popular during the early to mid-1900s.

“We started out writing a song about the Scott City Northern Railroad that ran from Scott City to Winona, going through the state park,” says Beach.

While doing research, Beach and the students learned that families would take the train to “the Beaver.”
