Less than 24 hours into the Kansas State University band clinic, Jordan Wagner felt he might be in for a long three days.
He felt director Brent Ghiglione from the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, was a little “intimidating.”
In addition, he was then asked to perform a percussion piece with two mallets in each hand.
“Mallet percussion has never been my thing,” says the Scott Community High School senior. “I was nervous and when I saw (band director Suzette) Mrs. Price I told her I wasn’t sure I could do this.”
That quickly changed.
The following day, Dr. Ghiglione had named Wagner the drum captain following percussionist tryouts.
At the conclusion of the three-day clinic, Wagner was named the “Outstanding Musician” among the six concert bands that weren’t part of the all-star band.
