On April 4, 1968, just hours after Martin Luther King was assassinated, presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy broke the news at a large gathering in a predominantly black neighborhood in Indianapolis, Ind.
Had social distancing measures begun a week earlier, 36,000 lives could have been saved, according to Columbia University researchers. Instituting measures two weeks earlier would have spared more than 80 percent of the cases and deaths, their research suggests.
There was a time when newspapers were the only show in town if someone wanted to air their grievances against city government, their Congressman, or even the local editor.
